Leading with Art An Artistic Approach
As a creative wonderer, when looking at the work of other out-of-this-world designers, I often find myself in the cosmic awe of the heavenly delights presented before me; time after time, I ponder what goes on in the minds of other designers and artists during their creative process.
With so many unique and talented interior designers out there, fabricating and enriching spaces while eloquently balancing practical functionality;- to relay the story of the end user(s); is undeniably a tricky affair.
What three fundamental elements of designing your home matter to you the most?
In this chapter, we wanted to dive deeper into what sets one impeccable design project apart from the next and ask the question, at what point should you consider (Art)?

THE GOOD, THE GREAT AND THE AFTERTHOUGHT…..
Some would say that The Art lies within the science of it all, while others focus on finding specific pieces that speak to the room in conjunction with its occupants.
Ornamentation that decorates the niches and walls of a property help to illustrate the spirit of a room, inserting texture and depth while issuing a sense of emotion.
Most seasoned Art and design moguls see the entire design process, from concept to implementation, as artistry; from the materials to the formation, parallel to the use of colour and alignment principles. These aspects, consolidated with several other components, are ordained to communicate a language that keeps the building, its residents and its guests at the centre of the design. Each moving part fuses to make a giant masterpiece, every item hand-picked and arranged to aid and reflect the life philosophy of its occupants.
Does your current home style capture the spirit of who you are?
In some cases, physical art subjects, such as paintings, sculptures, prints and so on, are viewed as an afterthought.
An approach accepted as just a commodity that provides visual focus called upon to fill negative space, depleting the gravitas and relationship between user and observer, giving way to fleeting trends rather than offering a more immersive and emotional connection to the object(s) in question.
We see Art as a vital instrument which helps to anchor a room. It can assist in the cultivation of a design story, injecting nuances that deepen the textural context of a design, wrapping up our client(s) interior design story in a way that stimulates the user(s) and intrigues the observer.
Selecting Art which captures the heritage, values and location can help to unite and summon its residents to the environment.
In some cases, forgotten treasures or sentimental objects collected over time can be the starting point of inspiration.
These forgotten treasures can be displayed and used for colour reference or motivation to incite a possible mood into a room, assigning tone and a practical direction to a design scheme.

Art of any kind can be a great source of stimulus to help kickstart a project.
Local artisans can be a great resource when searching for pockets of inspiration. Uncovering hidden gems and local crafts can connect you to local talents and is a rewarding way to support local businesses. In sourcing locally, you may discover regional artists you resonate with and indulge in acquiring a custom-made feature for you and your guests to experience.
30-MINUTE TREASURE HUNT CHALLENGE
Set aside 30 minutes to rummage through your storage cupboards, attics, cellars, garages, and any other place in your family homes (not forgetting any independent storage units you may be paying for but have completely abandoned). Look for anything you think of as hidden treasure, an object or item you could use to inspire your next home design project.

THE ART OF IT ALL

Art galleries such as Saatchi Gallery LDN, The SANAA Gallerie NLD and Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), NYC, each charmingly designed building has a unique architectural narrative. Celebrated as a community hub, fashioned to promote Art and artists alike. Nothing but Art, negative spaces, and vast floods of light fill the space within.
The motive of this particular building is to exhibit artwork while its users roam freely within the expanse.

THE ART OF IT ALL
……. continued
Residential properties, however, have different intentions.
Although it is feasible to house Art within this construct, its structure is unlikely to be designed the same way as a gallery. Created to shelter humans from the outside world, the leading purpose of this development is primarily functional.
There is proof that adopting an artistic approach to interior design can improve one’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Don’t just take our word for it. There are plenty of studies out there that reinforce this methodology.

At the start of any design project, accommodating all installations, including marking out where subsequent Art will or can reside, will save you time when completing your interior fit-out.
Load-bearing walls and other reinforced spaces can be incorporated into the foundations of a building, ensuring enough room is permitted to accommodate heavier/larger-scaled items.

If the design and build phase does not apply to you, Art placement planning in the early concept and development stages will be the next stage to consider. Thinking about your preferred Art medium and what you are seduced by will begin highlighting related complementary furnishings and other key features you may want to express and bring into the space.
Deciding to choose your art features after you have already carried through your colour scheme and imposed your interior style into your home can result in design conflict, even more so if you have no idea what you’re looking for or where to find it. The challenge you now face will be trying to find Art which fits around your design and layout rather than your artistic choices being a part of your design story.
Many of your choices will be dictated by the colour palette of your chosen paint scheme, narrowing down your options and leaving you to hunt out pieces which colour-match your room. Locating artwork which fits your design is only half the battle won. Sourcing paintings, prints, sculptures or other items of desire which assist in narrating your story while simultaneously connecting you with pieces of sentiment, resulting in timeless articles that future generations can cherish, could prove to be a little more challenging.
FINAL REFLECTIONS
Art which inspires, motivates great design.
We asked; what sets one flawless design apart from the next;- and at what point should we consider (Art)?
To sum it up, the design that captures the spirit of the people who live within will always roar and shine different, putting context to the phrase,
“No two designs are the same”.
“Great design doesn’t date.” Harry Seidler
Staying true to your authentic self and emulating this into your home is the key to creating a stimulating home design. While following trends doesn’t quite cut it if you want to create a space that resonates, accommodates and is fit for purpose.

As a collective, we believe each piece of furniture sourced should be observed as a functional, stand-alone piece of Art.
Furniture that stands powerfully on its own yet can still harmonise effortlessly in conversation with the rest of the room is what we pursue in every design.
Regardless of what stage we are appointed on a project, contemplating the finer details goes hand in hand with what we do. It’s our job to listen to the heart of the building and then marry it to the soul of the end user(s).
Whether you are a modernist or a traditionalist, well-thought-out Art can lead your design forward in ways you may have never imagined.
Choosing items you bond with whilst considering them throughout your entire design journey will maximise your storytelling options and help bring eternal life to your design one layer at a time in the most extraordinary ways.
